Course: Engaging with Science Policy Through New Media
DETAILS
Science communication is a multifaceted practice, but traditional science communication training is often limited to the most common academic communications (grants, manuscripts, presentations). There are fewer opportunities to gain experience in communicating science via interactive digital platforms, or new media. Yet, these platforms play an increasingly crucial role in shaping public comprehension of complex scientific topics. SCOPE’s 10-week “New Media” course will focus on four units. In Unit 1, participants will explore foundational science communication strategies, learning to tailor messages and craft compelling narratives for various audiences. Unit 2 delves into how social and cultural lenses shape the interpretation of scientific data, addressing the challenges of misinformation in today’s media landscape. Unit 3 applies these insights to case studies in public health and the environment. During Unit 4, participants create deliverables such as podcasts, videos, and infographics with the help of iterative feedback from instructors and peers.
