Course Summary:
Science communication is a multifaceted practice, but traditional graduate programs are often limited to training in the most common academic communications (grants, manuscripts, presentations). There are fewer opportunities for trainees to gain experience in communicating science via interactive digital platforms, or new media. Yet, these platforms play an increasingly crucial role in shaping public comprehension of complex scientific topics. This is exemplified by the complicated public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic amid online misinformation. It is important that scientists are able to engage in public science discourse on both traditional and new media channels, especially amid shifting political landscapes.
